Suitable for Grades: 3rd Grade, 4th Grade
CCSS: 3.NF.A.3.D, 4.NF.A.2
CCSS Description: Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Students will use visual representatives to begin ordering and comparing unit fractions throughout this worksheet.
Students will begin coloring in shapes by different pairs unit fractions before deciding which one is larger.
We have provided a colorful fraction wall in section B which students can use to compare unit fractions using inequality symbols.
Once learners have found a pattern, they will order lists of unit fractions from least to greatest. The worksheet concludes with a complete the sentence activity.
