Suitable for Grades: Algebra I, IM 1
CCSS: 7.EE.A.1, HSA.SSE.B.3
CCSS Description: Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression.★ a. Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros of the function it defines. b. Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the maximum or minimum value of the function it defines. c. Use the properties of exponents to transform expressions for exponential functions. For example the expression 1.15t can be rewritten as (1.151/12)12t ≈ 1.01212t to reveal the approximate equivalent monthly interest rate if the annual rate is 15%
Your learners will practice expanding parentheses and taking out one term factors throughout this worksheet, a great consolidation or review activity.
In section A, students will simplify expressions where two or more terms are multiplied together, reinforcing negative number operations and exponent rules for multiplication. Sections B and C see students expanding parentheses. This includes expressions that need to be simplified after the expansion, for example, expressions that contain two sets of parentheses. Students will end with ten expressions to factor. Some expressions contain more than one common factor, and not all are linear.
