Suitable for Grades: Algebra I, IM 1
CCSS: 7.EE.A.1, HSA.SSE.B.3
CCSS Description: Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression.★ a. Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros of the function it defines. b. Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the maximum or minimum value of the function it defines. c. Use the properties of exponents to transform expressions for exponential functions. For example the expression 1.15t can be rewritten as (1.151/12)12t ≈ 1.01212t to reveal the approximate equivalent monthly interest rate if the annual rate is 15%
This worksheet aims to build on students' knowledge of expanding parentheses in order to introduce factoring. Throughout the worksheet, students will complete multiplication grids where they are multiplying two term expressions by a single term (either a constant or a variable). The grid is completed by writing the factored form and the expanded form. As the worksheet progresses, students have to fill in different parts of the multiplication grid, leading them naturally to an understanding of factoring.
Then in section F, students will list the GCF of two terms. Finally in section G, students will factor 24 expressions, all with two terms ,but including negative variables, number and variable factors, and sometimes both.
