Suitable for Grades: Kindergarten, 1st Grade
CCSS: 1.G.A.1, K.G.A.2
CCSS Description: Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
Learners can begin to discuss properties such as how many sides shapes have and sort shapes into groups with this activity. Here students will cut out images of 11 different polygons and will be asked questions such as “can you find all the shapes with more than 4 sides”. This works well as a discussion activity.
