What Do Year 1 Students Learn in Maths?
Year 1 marks the beginning of formal mathematics education in primary school, where children aged 5-6 develop essential number sense and foundational mathematical skills. Building upon Early Years experiences, students encounter structured mathematical learning for the first time, with the National Curriculum emphasising fluency, reasoning and problem-solving from the very start.
Number work forms the core of Year 1 mathematics. Children learn to count reliably to and across 100, recognise the place value of each digit in two-digit numbers, and use the language of equal to, more than, less than. They develop fluency with number bonds within 20 and begin adding and subtracting one-digit and two-digit numbers, including zero.
Multiplication and division concepts are introduced through practical activities, with children solving problems involving grouping, sharing and counting in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s. Fractions begin simply with recognising, finding and naming halves and quarters of shapes, objects and quantities.
Geometry and measurement run alongside number work. Children learn to recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes, describe position and direction, and compare lengths, weights and capacities. They sequence events chronologically and learn to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour.
