What Do Year 2 Students Learn in Maths?

Year 2 represents the final year of Key Stage 1, where children aged 6-7 consolidate their mathematical foundations and prepare for the increased demands of Key Stage 2. This crucial year focuses on developing mathematical fluency and ensuring children are confident with essential number facts before moving to the junior years.

Place value understanding extends as children learn to recognise the value of each digit in two-digit numbers, compare and order numbers to at least 100, and count in steps of 2, 3 and 5 from zero. Addition and subtraction skills progress to include two-digit numbers, with children recalling and using addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently.

Multiplication and division become more formal in Year 2. Children learn to recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, recognising odd and even numbers. They calculate mathematical statements and solve problems involving multiplication and division using arrays, repeated addition and mental methods.

Fractions work develops to include recognising, finding, naming and writing fractions including halves, quarters and thirds. Geometry covers identifying and describing properties of 2D and 3D shapes, whilst measurement includes reading scales, telling time to five minutes, and understanding money.
